⚡ What is a surge arrester?
A surge arrester is a device that protects electrical systems from sudden voltage spikes, such as those caused by lightning or power surges. In practice, it diverts the surge to earth, reducing the risk of damage to connected electronic equipment.
It is a useful tool, but it has one major limitation: it only intervenes after the lightning has already struck. The damage is often already underway.
🚫 The limitation of traditional SPDs: acting too late
Lightning generates electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) and instantaneous surges that can spread even without direct contact.
